Packing the Right Way

How you pack your items is one of the most important factors in making sure your items can be transported safely. Follow these simple packing tips to pack like a professional.

Pack Like a Professional
  • On average, each box will take approximately 30 minutes to pack - allow the appropriate amount of time for yourself.
  • Pack appropriately for the box. Keep in mind that smaller boxes are actually intended for heavier items like books, while larger boxes are for lighter items such as blankets and linens.
  • Packing tape is an important tool - these items will be going a long distance, so don’t just interlock the box top. Firmly tape the top and bottom of the boxes - doubling for heavier boxes.
  • Think like a grocery store bagger. If heavy items are going in a box with lighter items, place the heavy items at the bottom.
Think "Outside the Box"
  • When packing and unpacking sensitive items, doing so on a padded surface such as a pile of blankets will provide a cushion if you slip.
  • Think "outside of the box" when selecting boxes. Your standard moving box isn’t the only way you can pack your items. There are many box options out there to help you pack different kinds of items. China boxes are great for dishes - and they have reinforced walls, which will provide added security for other sensitive items like vases. Wardrobe boxes are great for packing clothing. They let you hang your clothes instead of folding them. Familiarize yourself with these unique box options to keep your move as efficient as possible.
  • Unlike newspaper, packing paper will not smudge ink on your items. It is preferred for porous items, such as lampshades.
Take Your Time
  • Take time to accurately mark the outside of boxes after they have been packed - especially if the items are going into storage. A few extra seconds go a long way when you are sorting through a packed storage unity months or years later.
  • Seperate any boxes of items you might need immediately when the truck arrives at the destination. Instruct the movers to load these items last, so they can be unloaded quicker at the destination.
  • The movers can arrange for mattress wrapping, but if you would like to take a proactive approach to expedite the process, mattress bags can be purchased most places bed furnishings can be found.
